How are all our furriest friends spending their summers? They’re making splashes in the pool, chomping down on yogurt-berry pupsicles, and showing off their most festive 4th of July outfits! Thank you to all our readers for sharing your pup’s photos with us.  We’ve shared them on our Dogster social media pages – check out our #dogsterdogs in action! This summer, I’m working with my pups on their comfort levels near the water. We’re making progress! Emmy and I are graduating this weekend from the pool and are going on a little paddle boarding adventure to the lake by our house. Emmy has always hated getting wet, so she’s come a long way.

Something to think about this month: How will you keep your dogs calm during 4th of July fireworks? Many dogs get anxious and fearful of the loud, unpredictable noises. Here are some tips on calming your dog, which will make your celebration a happier one, too. Wishing all our puppy pals a happy 4th of July!

It’s officially summer and here in Northern California that means hot, dry weather, lots of pool and ice cream time  — and the start of fire season. Over the past couple of years, devastating fires have destroyed homes and millions of acres of land, displacing families, pets and wild animals. Although, it’s not pleasant to think about, having an emergency preparedness plan for your family, including your pets, makes split decisions easier when disaster strikes. June is National Pet Preparedness month and an ideal time to start (or finalize) your plan. Need some inspiration? A couple years ago, I wrote this article about organizations that help pets in natural disasters.

One step is making sure you prioritize the right gear, such as a carseat, harness, leash and to-go bag packed with essentials.  Having these items in one organized location eliminates the stress of decision making when you have to get out of the house fast.

Three May dog holidays stick out for me: National Dog Mom’s Day (for obvious reasons),  International Chihuahua Appreciation Day (see my Chiweenie, Lucy, in the photo!) and National Rescue Dog Day. Even though both my girls, Emmy and Lucy, now comfortably lounge around my house on their oversized beds, they once had no homes. During the height of the Covid pandemic, Emmy was abandoned at a school about an hour from my house. One of the teachers (my friend’s aunt) noticed a white, scruffy, furry dog around campus at all hours. She kindly took the dog to the vet, confirmed with the small community there was no responsible dog parent, and through social media efforts, Emmy made her way to our family. She loves to “talk,” to us (she picture) and is a happy and playful 3-year-old pup. Rescuing is not an option for everyone, but if you do ever have the chance to care for a homeless dog, it’s an incredibly rewarding experience.

May is also Westminster Kennel Club Dog show month and we’ve listed all the events, dates and links, so you won’t miss any of the furtastic action. Competing in dog shows isn’t as intimidating as it seems; it’s a fun way to bond with your dog. Nearly any dog breed (purebred or mixed breed) can enter and there’s a variety of events for all sizes and personality types. Read more about options for your dog and how to enter local dog competitions.
