The 5 Tips and Tricks for Grooming a Corgi

1. Brush your Corgi regularly.

Corgis have a thick double coat, which means they shed a lot. Regular brushing will help keep their coat looking nice and shiny, and it will also help reduce shedding. During their more intensive shedding periods in the spring and fall, they will need daily brushing to keep the shedding undercoat from getting mats or clumps.

Some Corgis enjoy the sensation of being brushed. Others, not so much. If they’re reluctant, you can use treats or lots of praise to make the experience better for both of you.

2. Give them a bath occasionally.

While Corgis don’t need to be bathed often (their double coat deters dirt from sticking) they do need a good scrub every now and then. Remember, wet Corgis are even cuter than dry ones! Baths also keep their skin free from dead skin and old fur, both of which can be irritating.

Use a gentle dog shampoo and conditioner, and make sure that you take extra time to rinse all the product off. Hot spots can result from pockets of trapped moisture, so you may want to use a blow dryer to make sure your Corgi is thoroughly dry.

3. Trim their nails.

Corgis need their nails trimmed, just like any other breed. Long nails can cause discomfort and even pain; it can affect your dog’s overall posture if they’re trying to walk and run on long nails. Make sure to keep them short and examine them for damage or injuries.

Nail-clipping is notorious doggie “ick”, and most dogs are not fond of it! So use positive reinforcement and counter-conditioning to help with their anxiety at the sight of the clippers. What better excuse to give your Corgi a much-desired belly rub.

4. Clean their ears.

Corgis are prone to ear infections, so it’s important to keep their ears clean and dry. And no one likes that funky smell that some dogs can get if their ears go too long without being cleaned. Always use a dog-specific ear cleaning solution and cotton balls, and make sure not to go too deep into the ear canal. Note: cotton swabs/Q Tips should only be used by veterinarians or grooming professionals.

5. Brush their teeth.

Just like humans, dogs need their teeth brushed to maintain good oral health. This is one aspect of grooming that many of us tend to overlook, to the detriment of our dog’s health. Tooth infections like periodontitis can easily spread to the bloodstream and affect your Corgi’s overall health.

Always use a dog-specific toothbrush and toothpaste, and brush at least two or three times a week. And don’t forget to reward your Corgi with a treat afterwards!
